What to Wear for a Mother’s Day Photoshoot | Spring Dresses Worth Buying

Every year I do a Mother’s Day photoshoot with my son. It started as a small, quiet tradition and it’s become one of my favorite things we do together. A chance to mark the season, to document this specific version of us, to wear something that feels intentional rather than grabbed off the floor.

This year I’ve been deep in the research, and I want to share what I found.

I’ve been eyeing DÔEN for a while. Their dresses sit in a particular sweet spot that’s hard to find: feminine and floaty but modern, with a touch of bohemian ease. They’re made well, they’re a sustainable brand, and they feel like a genuine treat rather than a fast purchase. The kind of dress you buy once and reach for for years.

I’ve put together a full collection of spring dresses I love for a Mother’s Day shoot, or really any occasion that deserves something beautiful. A lot of them are on sale right now so the timing is good.

My Favorites

My DÔEN Pick

Whimsical and the kind of dress that photographs beautifully in natural light. This is the one I’m most likely wearing.

The Accessible Option

Not every dress needs to be a big financial investment. I included a few dresses in the under $100 range that have the same romantic spring energy without the price tag.

Versatility for the Win

This Christy Dawn dress is one that I can see transitioning effortlessly from a spring shoot to a summer dinner to a weekend farmers market.

The One Already My Closet

This si the one I already have (and love!). It’s turned out to be a wonderful everyday wear and can be dressed up and down.

A note on fit and styling:

For photoshoots specifically I tend to gravitate toward solid colors or very subtle prints; they read better in photos and keep the focus on the moment rather than the pattern. Flowy silhouettes move beautifully in outdoor light. And whatever you choose, wear it around the house first so you feel like yourself in it, not like you’re wearing a costume.

These dresses are great well beyond Mother’s Day. A good spring dress is one of the most versatile things in a wardrobe and these will carry you through the season and into fall with ease.
