Styling Notes: Oversized Trench Coat

There are a few pieces that can quietly hold a wardrobe together but an oversized trench coat is definitely one of them. It's the kind of staple that doesn’t demand attention, but somehow makes everything look a little more considered. I’ve found myself reaching for mine on cool mornings, in-between seasons, and even in the winter when a coat feels too stuffy.

The beauty of an oversized trench is in its ease. It’s structured but not stiff, classic but still causal enough for everyday. And the beauty of a trench is that it only gets better with wear, somehow becoming the perfect complement to any outfit the more it ages.

Why It’s a Wardrobe Staple

The oversized trench is iconic. It pulls together denim and sneakers just as easily as it layers over slip dresses or tailored trousers. It works on windy spring mornings, misty autumn afternoons, and even those unpredictable in-between days when you’re not quite cold but not warm either.

A good trench — slightly roomy, slightly slouchy — shouldn’t scream for attention. It blends into the background the way we all secretly want our clothes to do.

Styling Notes: Ways to Wear It

  1. With Relaxed Jeans and a White Tee
A trench elevates even the simplest jeans-and-tee combo, making it feel intentional without losing ease.

  2. Draped Over a Dress
The perfect soft structure over a ribbed knit dress — ideal for cool spring days or layering in early fall.

  3. Belted With Trousers
Tighten the waist with the belt for a little more shape over trousers. This is particularly effective over wide leg pants to create some volume on the bottom where you can play with proportions.

  4. Over the Shoulders with a Knit Sweater
A trench over a beautiful knit sweater is one of my favorite ways to style it. It’s perfect for tempermental weather because you can always take off the knit and drape it around your shoulders for a casual prep look.

  5. On top of a Hoodie
The juxtaposition of a classic trench and and a casual sweatshirt or hoodie just exudes cool girl. Pairing it with jeans and a low sneaker or loafer is an outfit formula that never goes wrong.

  6. Over a Slouchy Button-Down
A soft button-down with jeans or trousers, then layered with a trench, feels thoughtful but still a little undone — the best combination.

Make It Your Own

An oversized trench is a blank canvas — but the little details make it yours. Roll the sleeves back to show off a wrist stack or the cuffs of your shirt beneath. Cinch the waist loosely with the belt, or leave it undone for a relaxed drape.

Fabric, color, and length will make all difference. Look for a trench with a soft cotton twill or gabardine that moves with you, not against you. The right weight will let you layer it through different seasons without it feeling heavy or bulky. A classic tan or khaki is failsafe but go with what would be deemed neutral for your wardrobe, maybe that a black, navy or even chocolate brown. As for length, something that hits mid calf will give you lost of versatility but if you find that overwhelming try our midi or even cropped lengths until you find something you’ll want to reach for with almost any outfit.

All In All

An oversized trench isn’t just a practical layer, it’s the gateway to style without any thought. It’s the jacket you grab when you want to feel like yourself, but a little more pulled together.
